Markus Klug is a distinguished figure in German horse racing. Born on June 9, 1976, in Arad, Romania, and raised in Rastatt near Baden-Baden, Germany, Klug has an impressive career as a trainer. After completing his high school and military service, he initially embarked on a career as an insurance salesman.
His exceptional talent in horse training emerged when he topped his class with a grade of 1.5 in the owner-trainer exam in Cologne in 2002. Klug began his training career in Iffezheim, further honing his skills by successfully completing his training as a Master of Horse Management in Cologne in 2009. In 2010, he moved to the training facilities of Gestüt Röttgen in Cologne, achieving remarkable success, including winning the German Trainer Championship in 2014 and from 2016 to 2018.
With horses like Sea the Moon, Windstoß, and Weltstar, Klug achieved significant victories, including the German Derby. His victories with Windstoß in 2017 ended a nearly sixty-year wait for Gestüt Röttgen in this prestigious race. These achievements not only brought him recognition but also placed him at the top of the German Racing Champions League in 2017 and 2018.
After 13 years of successful tenure at Gestüt Röttgen, Markus Klug decided to continue his career as an independent trainer, a decision announced in September 2023, marking a new chapter in his impressive career. Known for his technical expertise and instinct for horses, Klug leaves Röttgen on mutual terms, eager to achieve new successes as an independent trainer.
His departure from Röttgen and the potential move as a public trainer to Krefeld signify his desire to continually evolve and embrace new challenges. Markus Klug remains a key figure in German horse racing, with his career trajectory followed with great interest.
